Challenge

The Cambridge Foundry: Chair of the Programming and Community Outreach Committee

The Cambridge Foundry faced the significant challenge of transforming its 50,000-square-foot facility into a vibrant, inclusive hub that genuinely reflects the needs and aspirations of the Cambridge community.

Located in Kendall Square, a global innovation hub, the Cambridge Foundry bridges the gap between this dynamic environment and underrepresented residents, ensuring equitable access to resources, programming, and opportunities.

Additionally, positioning the Cambridge Foundry as a world-class leader in community-driven creative resource required designing platforms on which internal and external programs and operations prioritize attracting and retaining the broadest demographic to contribute to the Cambridge Foundry’s people-empowerment.

Process

As Chair of the Programming and Community Outreach Committee, Janos works closely with Foundry staff and stakeholders to refine its mission and programs. This process involved:

  • Supporting Staff: Providing guidance and resources to enable the Cambridge Foundry team to deliver impactful programs that meet community needs.

  • Reframing the Maker Space Concept: Advocating for a paradigm where creative spaces are seen as community centers focused on safe, collaborative creation and skill-building.

  • Strategic Planning: Designing long-term marketing strategies, initiatives, and events that unite Cambridge residents around a shared vision of creativity and innovation.

  • Safety as a Core Principle: Developing mind/body safety training and philosophies to ensure that all operations and activities promote physical and emotional well-being.

  • Community Engagement: Leveraging my perspective as a Cambridge resident and parent to ensure the Foundry is an accessible and enjoyable destination for families, inspiring creativity in a welcoming environment.

Solution

The Cambridge Foundry evolved into a model community hub, embodying inclusivity and collaboration while offering diverse, accessible, equitable programming across arts, technology, and workforce education.

"The Cambridge Foundry exemplifies what happens when a community unites around creativity and inclusivity, turning shared spaces into catalysts for personal and collective growth."

learnings

The Cambridge Foundry underscores the transformative power of intentional, inclusive design and programming. Key insights included:

  • Community-First Philosophy: A creative space is most impactful when it prioritizes empowering individuals and fostering collaboration through intentional cultural development through universally inclusive mandates.

  • Eliminate Hurdles: Offer sliding scales and low barriers to entry over merely providing tools or facilities.

  • Safety Enables Creativity: When people are physically and emotionally secure, they are more willing to take risks and innovate.

  • Representation Matters: Equitable access requires constant intentional work to reach underrepresented communities, ensuring everyone is welcomed and valued.

  • Iterative Development: Flexibility and responsiveness to feedback are critical for adapting to a community's diverse and evolving needs.

"The Cambridge Foundry’s success lies in its ability to build a space where creativity thrives, diversity is celebrated, and community becomes a shared journey."
